Should you pair up dogs of the same sex?

Not a good idea. To ensure successful long-term happy relationships in your multi-dog home it’s best to pair up dogs of the opposite sex.

So, if you already have a male dog in the home, you stand the best chances for success if the next dog you adopt is a female, regardless of breed. And vice-versa: if you already have a female, look for a male.

Reports from the Association of Pet Behavior Counselors in 1996 showed 95 cases of fighting between same sex dogs within the home and only 20 involving opposite sexes.

Canines were meant to be paired in opposite sexes. It's one of the attributes of a sound pack.

There are cases where same sex pairings workout within a home. However, generally it’s a safer bet to bring home a dog of the opposite sex.

This does not guarantee that if you have a male and a female that they will never misbehave; good management is always key, no matter what combinations of dogs you have!

Enjoy your new family member!
